Amanda Brugel

Pointe Claire in Montreal's West Island is a tiny, quiet town. People unfamiliar with the term frequently think that there is a separate island in the west of Montreal however, this part of West Island is home to every aspect of Lachine west to the City of Lachine west. Amanda Brugel grew up on the island and is often referred to as her birthplace. However, she only was there for a brief time. Brugel grew to be a young woman living in Courtice Ontario, outside Oshawa. Her first ambition was to be a dancer. But, a growing increase caused her to surpass all of the dance partners she was able to have. In a recent interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels, I'm 6 feet 1 inches." Once I was bigger than the size of my male companion and stopped dancing, I quit. Many ex-dancers switch to acting. For Brugel it was the guidance of her drama teacher at high school that led her to the path she needed. Her teacher suggested she audition as Anne for their school's annual production. She tried out and ended up playing the role of the main character in Anne of Green Gables. This led to her being awarded an Fine Arts Talent Scholarship from York University. In 2000 she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts at York University. Over the past 20 years since Brugel has been offered roles in over 60 shows on both small and large screens, attracting the greatest attention when she landed the part as Rita in the award-winning television series The Handmaid's Tale (pictured below). Brugel is the only Canadian actor on the show in Season 1 and only appeared on occasion.
